Privacy Policy

Your privacy is not a feature. It's the foundation of how Scope is built.

Last updated: January 2025
The Short Version

Scope collects zero personal data. Period.

No tracking. No analytics. No accounts. No cloud servers. Everything stays on your device. The only thing Scope ever stores is your toggle preferences, locally, on your own browser. If you uninstall the extension, it all disappears.

What We Don't Collect

To be perfectly clear, here is everything Scope does not collect, store, or transmit:

Personal information
Browsing history
YouTube watch history
Search queries
IP addresses
Device information
Location data
Analytics or telemetry
Cookies or fingerprints
User activity of any kind

What's Stored Locally

Scope saves your preference settings (which features are enabled or disabled, your scheduled focus hours, and a small counter for blocked Shorts) using Chrome's local storage API.

Stays on your device only
Never transmitted anywhere
Not accessible to anyone
Deleted on uninstall
Resettable anytime
Fully encrypted by Chrome

Permissions Explained

Scope only requests the absolute minimum permissions needed to function. Here's what each one does and why we need it:

Host Permission (youtube.com)

Scope needs access to youtube.com to detect and hide Shorts, recommendations, and comments on the page. The extension only runs on YouTube and cannot read or modify any website.

Storage Permission

Used to save your toggle preferences locally so they persist between browser sessions. No data is ever sent externally. Storage is sandboxed to the extension itself.

Alarms Permission

Used only to power the Scheduled Focus feature, so Scope can automatically toggle on at your chosen work or study hours. No data leaves your machine.

Third-Party Services

Scope uses zero third-party services. No part of the extension talks to any external server, including ours.

No Google Analytics
No advertising networks
No data brokers
No external APIs
No cloud storage
No CDN tracking

Data Sharing and Selling

Since we collect zero data, we have nothing to share, sell, license, or transfer. There are no data partners, no advertising deals, and no business relationships built on your information.

We will never: sell your data, share it with third parties, use it for advertising, or transfer it for any purpose. There is no data to sell.

Children's Privacy

Scope does not collect any data from anyone, including children under 13. The extension is safe for users of all ages and complies with COPPA and GDPR-K by design, simply because no data ever changes hands.

Open Source and Verifiable

You don't have to take our word for it. Scope is fully open source. Every line of code is publicly auditable, so anyone can verify these privacy practices for themselves.

If you find anything that looks wrong, please open an issue. Transparency is the whole point.

Changes to This Policy

If we ever update this policy, we'll change the "Last Updated" date at the top of the page and announce it in the extension changelog. Our core commitment, that we will never collect or transmit your personal data, will never change.
